Provided, of course, that they actually cooperate and stay alive! Less about that.

Apart from knowing that you have an instant, fresh supply on hand – and that there are no undeclared chemicals lurking on the leaves – there are the other bonuses.

One small trug, planted with thyme, chives and mint, has proved rather hardy. I’m sure there are knowledgable folk out there who could point out that I have the wrong mix – but it actually has worked against the odds, and despite my erratic gardening skills. Happily rooted in compost, formed over time, from the kitchen veg ends. A mini circular economy model as old as thyme (couldn’t resist) and kitchen gardens.

The vigorous mint has suppressed the chives somewhat. I just grow more chives in a different place. The mint is useful though, as it is the first to get overdramatic with dismal, droopy leaves if the soil is the teeniest bit dry.

For the human part; thyme gives a boost to so many savoury dishes. Chives are in big demand to add to mashed potato, egg dishes or cream cheese for dip or spread. And the mint… well, for any tzatziki fan it is a must!

The beauty of this herb trug though, lies in its flowers. Starting with the trusty thyme, followed by the chives and then the mint, it is a butterfly and bees-of-all-shapes-and-sizes magnet from spring to autumn. Then, if you spare a glance on some warm summer night, you might well spot a moth floating through the floral haze. For my part, I can be happy knowing that they too have access to a non toxic treated feast. And they provide some inspiration for art pieces…

Live, laugh and smile on…

SarahG

On an organic herbs trug, butterflies, bees and moths ... and the coexistent culinary and ecological benefits, a mini circular ecomomy ... and art.
Another design that started life as part of the ‘Their world, in our hands’ collection.
